Buying Lottery Tickets in the 21st Century

USD 941.8 million...  On Christmas Day, 2012, Spain’s Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad (Spanish Christmas Lottery) paid out the history’s largest lottery jackpot: US$941.8 million. And Mega Millions (United State)s has paid out over 500 million (USD) on five occasions. What’s driving these jackpots? The internet, of course.

In the days of old, we all forced to stand up, walk out the door, drive down the local 7/11, and buy our lottery tickets.

But this is the 21st century!!

Buying lottery tickets online is easy and fun. Here’s what you need to know:

• You must be 18 years old to collect winnings.

◦ A standard EuroMillions ticket costs ~2.00 (EUR) ◦ All prizes, including the jackpot, are paid as a lump sum.

• #3 :: Mega Millions (USA) 

◦ MINIMUM JACKPOT: 15,000,000 (USD)
◦ A multi-state lottery game with MEGA jackpots and MEGA fun:

• #5 :: “El Gordo” de la Primitiva (SPAIN) 

◦ MINIMUM JACKPOT: 5,000,000 (EUR)
◦ The Spanish Christmas lottery is the second longest continuously running lottery in the world. (This includes the years during theSpanish Civil War.)
◦ As measured by the total prize payout, the Spanish Christmas Lottery is considered the biggest lottery worldwide.
◦ In 2012, if all of the tickets had been sold.
◦ The total amount of all prizes of the first category called El Gordo ("the big one") was 720 million (EUR) which was distributed among 180 winning tickets (billetes) that win 4 million (EUR) each.
▪ Serial Number - Each book is printed up many times as with different serial numbers.
▪ Book- €200 each - An entire book of a 5-digit number, which consists of 10 “décimos” (tenths of a book).
▪ Décimo(tickets)- €20 each - One tenth of a book. Most people purchase décimos.
